Editor — So Wesley Morris at first thought the casting of Gillian Anderson as Lily Bart in „The House of Mirth“ was a joke („A Fully Realized ‚House‘: Gillian Anderson rises to challenge of Wharton novel,“ Jan. 12) and then was shocked, shocked! to discover that she could act.

What Morris apparently does not know — and what every „X-Files“ fan knows well — is that each week on the „The X-Files“ Anderson delivers an intelligent, soulful and richly nuanced performance. She has won both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for her work in this series.

If Morris could step back from his smug and contemptuous attitude for a moment and inform himself about the art form for which he’s supposed to be providing an expert critical opinion, he would realize that some of our best film actors start in (and often return to) series television.
